Dronis - 3 mg + .02 mg

This drug has a generic name Ethinyl estradiol and Drospirenone which is a birth control pill marketed under the brand name Yaz. It works by preventing ovulation process or the release of a female egg from ovaries. This medication also helps to perform changes in the cervical and uterine lining which further makes the cervical mucus more viscous and make it harder for male sperms to reach the uterus and also for a fertilized egg to bond to the uterus wall.  This pill can be taken as a contraceptive method to prevent unwanted pregnancy. It is also used to treat moderate acne problems in women who are above 14 years of age and have started getting their periods, and for those women who wish to use contraception to prevent pregnancy.

Ethinyl estradiol/Drospirenon is also used for removing the symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) like depression, anxiety, irritability, concentration troubles, lethargy, changes in sleep patterns or appetite, muscle or joint pain, tender breasts, and weight gain. It is also used for other treatments which are not listed here.

Important information about Ethinyl estradiol/Drospirenone

This drug is not recommended if you are pregnant or if you have delivered a baby. You should avoid this pill if you have following conditions: heart disease, out of control high blood pressure, blood clotting disorder, problems with circulation, problems in eyes or kidneys due to diabetes, unexplained vaginal bleeding, liver disease or liver cancer, migraine, if you are smoker and above 35, breast or uterine cancer, jaundice due to birth control pills, or a heart attack or a stroke in the recent past.  You may also be required to use an alternate birth control method such as condoms or spermicide in the initial few days of starting with the pills or if you miss the dose. Before taking Ethinyl estradiol/Drospirenone

Before taking Ethinyl estradiol/Drospirenone, take care of all the above mentioned precautions and let your doctor know about all the medical history. Notify your doctor if you are allergic to any medications or any ingredients present in ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone. In order to safely use this pill, tell your doctor about any of these conditions: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, depression in the past, hypothyroidism, gall bladder disease, diabetes, seizures, irregular periods, tuberculosis, or a history of fibrocystic disease in breasts, or an abnormal mammogram.

Dosage information

Use Ethinyl estradiol/Drospirenone drug as prescribed by your doctor. Follow all the direction listed on the leaflet of your medicine. Do not alter the dosage unless your doctor advises you to do so. Also, do not take this medicine after the prescription period is over. Any departure from the prescribed amount of dosage may lead to harmful effects and render the medication ineffective. Start with the first pill on the first day of your period or on the first Sunday after that. You may be required an alternate contraception method for the initial days of using this medicine. You may need frequent doctor visit while being treated with this medication. Consume one Desogestrel pill via the oral route everyday and don’t go more than 24 hours without taking pill. Make it a habit to take one pill same time every day. Get a refill after a pack is over because missing a single dose may result into pregnancy.

In some rare case, you may get breakthrough bleeding during the first 3 months of starting this medication. Turn to your doctor if it persists or become heavy. Stop taking these pills if you experience severe vomiting, diarrhea and employ back up control method. If you are on a scheduled surgery or any medical test or advised bed rest, you may need to discontinue the medicines for some time.

What if you miss a dose?

Missing even a single dose of Ethinyl estradiol/Drospirenone may result into pregnancy. In case if you miss a dose, then take two pills on the day you remember. After that, take one pill each day for rest of the pack. If you happen to skip two active pills consecutively in the first and second week, then take two pills each day for two consecutive days. Then have one pill each day for the rest of the pack. Adopt alternate birth control method for at least one full week following the missed doses. If you start taking the pill on Sunday then have a pill every Sunday. On Sunday discard the pack and start with the new. If you happen to skip three active pills consecutively in week 1, 2, or 3, discard the rest of the pack and start with the new pack on the same day if you are a Day 1 starter.

What if you overdose?

In case of overdose, seek medical help or call your doctor on immediate basis. Overdose may leads to the symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and vaginal bleeding.

Things to avoid

Taking ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone pills may put you at the risk of blood clot, stroke, or heart attack if you are a smoker and above than 35 years. These pills may be more prone to blood clot than other contraceptive pills. This pill will not prevent from STD’s so stay away from unsafe sexual practices.

Side Effects

Some serious and rare side effects caused by this medicine are blood clotting disorders like deep vein thrombosis, heart attack, stroke, or embolism; sudden breath shortness; pain in chest, jaw or left arm; unexpected sweating; confusion bloody cough; sudden giddiness or fainting; migraines; vision or speech problems. Interaction with other drugs

Many other drugs can interact with ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone. Let your doctor know about your current medication and past medical history. Some drugs which may interact with it are- aromatase inhibitors (anastrazole, exemestane), raloxifene, sodium tetradecyl sulfate, tamoxifen, tizanidine. It may increase your blood potassium level. Some other medicines may also increase your blood potassium level such as aliskiren, ACE inhibitors like enalapril/lisinopril, angiotensin receptor blockers like losartan/valsartan, heparin, NSAIDs such as ibuprofen/naproxen, potassium-sparing "water pills"/diuretics like eplerenone/spironolactone/triamterene). Your doctor will know about the interactions and prescribe according to your present condition. Always consult your doctor about starting a new medication.
